Thanks to free selection of the grinding parameters, the PULVERISETTE 4 classic line is the ideal Planetary Mill for mechanical activation and alloying. The main areas of application lie in materials research and naturally anywhere that an effective, innovative Laboratory Planetary Mill is required.
Areas of application
The Vario-Planetary Mill is capable of simulating ball mills of typical design, precisely recreating the load types found in such mills and thereby reproducing or optimising the grinding processes.
Method of operation
In contrast to typical Planetary Mills, the innovative Vario-Planetary Mill allows for configuration of the speeds for grinding bowls and the support disc completely independently of each other. This makes it possible for the first time to perform both mechanical activation as well as mechanical alloying with a single mill through modification of the gear ratio.
Features overview
- Freely selectable, regulated speeds for grinding bowls and support disc
- Free programming of the grinding parameters with PC software
- RS232 interface for programming and for transfer of grinding parameters to the PC (validation) as well as for control of the PULVERISETTE 4 classic line
- Real-time display of the speeds for monitoring of the grinding process
- Reversing operation for improved grinding results
- Emulation of various ball mills
- Variably configurable load on the sample (friction and/or impact)
- Simultaneous grinding of up to 4 samples
- Quick clamping of grinding bowls
Equipment
The standard equipment delivered with the Vario-Planetary Mill PULVERISETTE 4 classic line includes 2 bowl mounts and clamping; however, it includes no grinding bowls or balls, which are available in 8 different materials and must be ordered as accessories.

Accessories
Please note: For this FRITSCH mill, you require at least two grinding bowls of your choice and the corresponding number of grinding balls. The grinding bowl material must also be harder than the material to be ground. In normal cases, grinding bowls and balls of the same material are used. To shorten the grinding time, larger or heavier balls with a higher density can be used, e.g. tungsten carbide balls in a steel bowl or zirconium oxide balls in a silicon nitride bowl. Please take note of the useful capacity, this is not identical with the bowl volume!

Grinding balls with diameter 3 mm and smaller must be weighed out. The above table provides you with the necessary weight to be included per grinding bowl.
The quantity of grinding balls can be reduced by up to 15%; however, increased wear should be expected in this case. The specified number/mass of balls per bowl is the minimum quantity; depending on the material behaviour, it may be necessary to increase this.
In normal cases, grinding bowls and balls of the same material are used. To shorten the grinding time, larger or heavier balls with a higher density can be used, e.g. tungsten carbide balls in a steel bowl or zirconium oxide balls in a silicon nitride bowl.
